A folding chef knife is a strange object until you have cooked away from a kitchen. The blade is a proper santoku or nakiri shape rather than a penknife, and it folds into its own handle so it travels in a bag without a sheath and without cutting anything on the way. Campsites, boats, holiday rentals with a drawer full of butter knives: those are the situations these exist for.
The part to check is the lock, not the blade. A folder is a knife with a hinge in it, and the hinge has to hold against the back of the edge under load, not merely against spring tension.
